Aji Nigiri Sushi – Horse Mackerel

a piece of aji sushi

Aji is Japanese horse mackerel. But the name is confusing. It’s actually not in the mackerel family. Rather, it’s a member of the jack family, which includes hamachi and kanpachi.

Aji sushi and sashimi are very popular in Japan. The peak season is in the summer, but they can be found year-round.

Aji is an oily fish with a rich taste. Its texture is semi-firm. Fresh aji does not have a strong fish flavor.
