a bottle of Nikka whisky

Fans of malty, peaty whisky should enjoy this week’s post. I dive deep into Nikka Yoichi, one of the most iconic brands of Japanese whisky.

And it’s a quality over quantity type week for news and product launches. A male model is launching a sake seltzer line, technicians are figuring out how to 3D print sushi, and Mike Pompeo’s stolen whisky is revealed.

Nikka Yoichi Single Malt Whisky

Nikka Yoichi whisky is an iconic Japanese whisky and a brand every whisky enthusiast should try. It’s the savory, peaty rival to fruity, floral Yamazaki.

My latest post covers the history of Yoichi, tasting notes, pricing and retailers, pairings, and more.

Sake Seltzer for the Masses

Male supermodel Jordan Barrett launched a line of sake seltzer, and the applause were heard from space.

The new brand, called Hapē, “will be the first relatable brand, in an accessible and mainstream format – the spiked seltzer.”

I thought Tyku was the first relatable sake brand. Anyway, I poke fun, but I don’t hate this. Will it be a gateway to legitimate sake for consumers? I doubt it. But these will likely sell. And bottom line, that’s good for the industry.

The Drinks Business has the scoop on this stylish new sake-based product.

3D Printed Sushi

A Japanese company is working to revolutionize the way food is prepared. Dentsu is developing 3D printers and base materials that can print food

The whole concept is pretty cool. But it’s pretty involved, so I’ll let Nikkei Asia explain.

Pompeo’s Whisky

If you’re unfamiliar with the saga, Mike Pompeo appears to have taken a bottle of expensive Japanese whisky that was not his to take.

I’ve posted about this missing whisky in a past newsletter. And not for political reasons, but because I was curious which whisky he allegedly stole.

And I finally have an answer. It was a Hibiki 30. It’s supposedly valued at $5,800. But if you know anything about this whisky, you’re aware that $5,800 is a steal. Pompeo, or someone close to him, knew that too.

If you want to learn more, here’s a link to an ABC article about Pompeo’s missing Japanese whisky.
