Japanese whiskey is a confusing category. The classic examples include Scotch-inspired styles like Single Malt and Blended whiskey.
Pure Malt is another style of whisky that is distinctively Japanese. In Scotland, Pure Malt often referred to whisky with 100% malted barley. In Japan, it implies that two single malts, from different distilleries are blended.
Koji whisky is a new category available only in the US. It’s basically barrel-aged shochu with too much color to be sold as shochu in Japan or Europe.
